Due to intensive hunting and habitat destruction the European Bison came close to extinction in the 1920s, the last free-ranging European Bison was shot in 1927 in the western Greater Caucasus. All Wisent groups that exist today are founded from 12 individuals which were kept in a handful of zoos and wildlife parks.
